After a day of errands, I stopped in to grab a quick bite to eat at the newest location of River City Cafe. It sets itself apart from other burger conglomerates on the grand strand by its unique decor of underground posh meets graffiti, all wrapped up in a feeling of comfort.

The walls are covered in license plates from around the country, the tables are decorated with hand-drawn paintings, and the floor is scattered with peanuts. The entire restaurant is covered in notes and autographs from past costumers, staking their claim on their hometown tags or right where they sat for lunch. The wait staff is friendly, remembering faces and orders of regulars and being patient with newcomers.

Our server, Dawn, recommended the Peanut butter burger with bacon, her personal favorite which was too odd to turn down. Surprisingly good, I didn’t have to take her up on her offer to buy my lunch if I didn’t love it. Other menu items were simple american classics with a River City twist, all fresh and satisfying.

The first River City Cafe is located in Murrells Inlet and has expanded into 7 locations. For a full menu or coupons visit www.rivercitycafe.com

The family friendly atmosphere of Myrtle Beach is extended to our furry family members with areas such as the Barc Park, which is free to all users.

If your dog has traveled with you consider giving him a vacation of his own. The dog park provides a fenced in area for dogs to run, unleashed, in order to enjoy the small lake and grassy areas. There is also a smaller fenced-in area for an obstacle course which provides a water fountain for when your dog athlete gets overheated.

While the dogs are sunning and swimming, their people can enjoy shaded areas with picnic tables and benches throughout the park. Many locals routinely meet to socialize during their “puppy play dates.”

If your dog has the energy, but lacks the social skills, consider bringing them during the weekday when the area is less crowded. The Barc Park is a popular playground after 5 pm and on the weekends. There are small and large dog areas, with separate entrances.

The park is situated inside Seagate Village in the Old Air Force Base, connected to Market Common. It is located on Mallard Lake Drive which is straight off of Howard Parkway.

Traveling outside of the Grand Strand? Visit dogparkusa.com for other dog parks throughout the US.

The Barc Park is managed by the City of Myrtle Beach (843-918-2390)

Last year, over 125 boats participated and it is open to anyone for free or a small fee of $5 to be judged.

Fireworks take off from the end of Veterans Pier at 10pm. They can be viewed from Murrells Inlet or Garden City right from the shore.

The park, originally property of Archer M. Huntington, was donated after his death and takes its name from him. His winter home, Atalaya Castle, is also located on the park. Built during the Great Depression by only local workers, it was designed to withstand hurricanes. The Friends of Huntington Beach State Park offer scheduled tours of the house and operate the Atalaya Visitor Center with exhibits about the house and the Huntingtons.
